Export your statements

Open your banking app, find Statements or Documents, and download the last 2 to 3 months for every account that subscriptions bill to. For most people that is one chequing account and one or two credit cards. PDF works; CSV is even better if your bank offers it. Five minutes.

Here are my last 2 to 3 months of statements. Find every recurring charge and build me a spreadsheet I can review:
One row per charge: what it is, which account it bills to, how often it bills, and the monthly cost.
Group the rows by category (software, streaming, insurance, memberships, and so on), with a subtotal for each category and a grand total at the bottom.
Add a Notes column: flag anything that looks unused, duplicated, or more expensive than it used to be, and say why.
Add a Status column for my decisions: keep, cancel, or investigate.

Attach the statements to the same message. If your AI is connected to Google Drive, ask it to create the spreadsheet as a Google Sheet; otherwise ask for a table you can copy into one. Mine came back organized exactly like this, and reviewing it took minutes because the notes told me where to look.

Sort into three piles

Keep. Cancel. Renegotiate. The AI sorts and flags; every decision is yours. Watch the duplicates especially: the same service on two cards, or two people in one house paying for the same thing. That is where my biggest finds were.

Cancel one today

While the momentum is real. Most cancellations take under two minutes once you actually go looking for the button. Ask for email confirmation and keep it.

Re-run it quarterly

Put a note in your calendar. Subscriptions grow back; that is what they do. The re-run takes fifteen minutes because now you know the drill.

WHICH AI, AND WHAT IT COSTS

Claude or ChatGPT, free or paid

I use Claude: it read all twelve of my statements in one sitting and built me a spreadsheet. ChatGPT works the same way for this.

The free versions let you upload files too, with daily limits. If you are on a free plan, start with one or two statements and see how far you get.

The paid plans (about $20 a month) are the comfortable way to do exactly what I did: several months, several accounts, one conversation. My first audit paid for a year of the plan on its own.

THE HONEST PART

$227 a month is my real, receipts-backed result. Yours will be different: maybe smaller, maybe bigger.
You need your statements and about an hour. There is no magic button.
The AI never cancels anything for you. It reads and sorts; you decide and click. That is a feature, not a limitation.
